Pig Iron – Types, Specifications & Applications
Pig Iron is a basic raw material used in the production of steel and cast iron. Manufactured by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace, it forms the foundation of several metallurgical processes. There are three main types of Pig Iron, each with specific characteristics suited to particular applications:
1. Basic Pig Iron (Steel Grade Pig Iron)
Specification (Typical Range):
- Carbon: 3.5%–4.5%
- Silicon: 0.5%–1.5%
- Manganese: 0.3%–1.2%
- Sulphur: < 0.05%
- Phosphorus: < 0.10%
Applications
- Used primarily in steel-making furnaces
- Acts as a charge material for electric arc furnaces
- Helps control chemistry in steel production due to its low sulfur and phosphorus content
Foundry Pig Iron (Foundry Grade)
Specification (Typical Range):
- Carbon: 3.8%–4.5%
- Silicon: 1.5%–2.5%
- Manganese: 0.5%–1.5%
- Sulphur: < 0.06%
- Phosphorus: 0.10%–0.25%
Applications
- Ideal for grey iron castings and general foundry work
- Used in manufacturing automotive parts, pumps, valves, and pipes
- Preferred by foundries due to higher silicon and carbon content which enhances fluidity
Special Grade Pig Iron (SG Iron Grade / Nodular Iron Grade)
Specification (Typical Range):
- Carbon: 3.8%–4.5%
- Silicon: 1.8%–2.8%
- Manganese: 0.2%–0.5%
- Sulphur: < 0.03%
- Phosphorus: < 0.08%
Applications
- Mainly used for ductile iron castings (SG Iron)
- Suitable for pressure-resisting components like hydraulic cylinders, pipes, and machinery
- Ensures better mechanical properties and nodularity when treated with magnesium
